Sudden unexpected natural death (SUND) is a peculiar entity having several characteristics such as very short course with unknown history and its social implication in diagnosis. Among them, sudden cardiac death takes major portion of the SUND and remains a challenging field in forensic pathology.
Cases of SUND in Scientific Investigation Laboratory, Ministry of National Defense from May 1990 to March 1995 were analyzed with emphasis to sudden cardiac death. Sixty nine (13.6%) cases of SUND were found out of total 505 cases, and among which 15 cases(21.7%) were without any significant morphological abnormalities and these can be categorized as so called `Sudden Manhood Death Syndrome¢¥. Others were diagnosed as acute heart failure (11 cases), coronary atherosclerosis (17 cases), endoand myocarditis (12 cases) and other several uncommon entities such as coronary artery anomaly or dissecting aneurysm of aorta. Some of above disease entities were reviewed with correlation to sudden cardiac death and remarks upon further investigational points or terminology of diagnosis were made.
